Eligibility Requirements and Legal Status for Ukrainian Refugees

The pri­ma­ry require­ment to access mobil­i­ty aids is hold­ing tem­po­rary pro­tec­tion sta­tus under § 24 Aufen­thG. This sta­tus grants imme­di­ate access to social ben­e­fits equiv­a­lent to Ger­man cit­i­zens.

Before apply­ing, you must reg­is­ter with local author­i­ties (Anmel­dung) and obtain a refugee reg­is­tra­tion cer­tifi­cate such as an Anmeldebescheini­gung or Fik­tions­bescheini­gung.

Documents and Preparation for Your First Jobcenter Visit

Pre­pare essen­tial doc­u­ments like your pass­port, tem­po­rary pro­tec­tion cer­tifi­cate, and reg­is­tra­tion con­fir­ma­tion (Anmeldebescheini­gung). Hav­ing a Ger­man bank account with an IBAN helps ensure smooth ben­e­fit pay­ments, though alter­na­tives exist if you don’t have one yet.

Also col­lect hous­ing doc­u­ments (rental agree­ment or accom­mo­da­tion con­fir­ma­tion) and med­ical doc­u­men­ta­tion such as preg­nan­cy or dis­abil­i­ty cer­tifi­cates. Offi­cial trans­la­tions are nec­es­sary for doc­u­ments issued out­side Ger­many.

Bürgergeld Application Process and Benefit Amounts

Sched­ule an appoint­ment at your local Job­cen­ter to sub­mit your appli­ca­tion (Antrag). The cur­rent Bürg­ergeld for sin­gle adults is €502 per month in 2024, with addi­tion­al allowances for hous­ing, heat­ing, and spe­cial needs includ­ing mobil­i­ty aids.

Pro­cess­ing typ­i­cal­ly takes 4–6 weeks; inter­im pay­ments are often avail­able. You can file a Wider­spruch (appeal) if your appli­ca­tion is denied or ben­e­fits are inad­e­quate.

Ongoing Obligations and Integration Support Services

Recip­i­ents must pro­vide month­ly reports on their job search and income, and par­tic­i­pate in required Ger­man lan­guage and ori­en­ta­tion cours­es (Inte­gra­tionskurs). Com­pli­ance with report­ing and par­tic­i­pa­tion require­ments is essen­tial to con­tin­ue receiv­ing ben­e­fits.

Health­care reg­is­tra­tion through the Job­cen­ter is manda­to­ry. Child ben­e­fits (Kindergeld) and edu­ca­tion­al sup­port such as BAföG are coor­di­nat­ed along­side Bürg­ergeld to facil­i­tate inte­gra­tion and inde­pen­dence.
